Republic Day is a national holiday in India that commemorates the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of India on January 26th 1950 (after India gained independence from British rule in 1947). It is a day to honour the country’s democratic values, unity in diversity and the sacrifices of freedom fighters. This year our school children celebrated by eating special treats, flag waving, singing patriotic songs, repeating slogans, reciting poems, doing traditional dances and generally having a very enjoyable time! Some of the children performed solo songs and poems, much to the delight of everyone. These activities help the children to learn about India’s history and culture and develop pride in their country.
An excited cohort of 28 women has just graduated from our 6 month Sewing and Tailoring vocational program at Open Hands Education Trust! With these graduates, we are pleased to report that more than 250 rural women have completed this vocational program! We are also very pleased that a new cohort of 20 women have just started the sewing/tailoring program this month. These women will be able to learn a trade and skills that will enhance their family income, and help give their children increased educational opportunities. This extra family income will also be important because since the Covid-19 pandemic, many families have lost breadwinners and employment opportunities. As the sewing students work together over their six month program we see many smiles and hear happy conversation - and by the end of the program, an amazing increase in self- confidence and self-esteem is evident in each graduate.
