We are now in the process of sending one of the senior female sewing students- Bulbul - to a city sewing school so that she can learn advanced sewing skills, and then return to assist the current sewing teacher with higher levels of clothing design. All the students are very excited about the prospect up upgrading their skills. Bulbul was able to take this training through the kind support of a sponsor.
Today we are able to give a gift of shoes to young women in the sewing program as well as children at the school. Since the children attending the our free school in Dadwan are from very poor families, parents can often not afford to buy shoes for their children. Though shoes alone cannot solve the problems they face, this gift can help the children and young women to build self-esteem and give them hope. A pair of shoes can protect their feet from infection, summer heat and injuries.
The school has now been in operation for one year! We now have 75 number of children are attending school. Since these children had never been to school before - as their parents could not afford to send them and did not understand the value of education - it has been an exciting year of the children as they settle into attending regularly and realize that learning can be fun, and that school is a safe and nurturing environment. We are providing the children with school supplies, workbooks, notebooks etc. as well as regular treats, such as food and candy to celebrate special occasions together. The children, as well as their parents, now understand how important it is to learn and to have an education - and more children want to enrol in the school.
After Open Hands Education Trust consulted with Village Elders about the needs of the village what would make the most difference for all the people in the rural village of Dadwan, it was recommended that the construction of a Hand Pump (Well) for the use of all the villagers was most needed. Dadwan is a rural village and area that has been increasingly affected by draught in recent years. Open Hands Education Trust completed the village hand pump (well) construction in April 2019. Since then it has proved to be an invaluable resource for all villagers, and is the only working well in the area at some points in the year, as it is so deep. More hand pumps (deep wells) are needed in the future. The Open Hands Education hand pump/well continues to work, and is cared for by the villagers
Another Open Hands Education Trust project that grew out of consultation with Village Elders is the construction of community toilets and hand washing stations in the village of Dadwan. Before the toilets and hand washing stations were available, villagers would use the fields for toileting. The World Health Organization has stated that WASH - meaning "Clean Water Access (wells), Sanitation (toilets) and Hygiene (hand washing)" are the most important components of improved health for children and adults in the developing world. Open Hands Education Trust is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of rural villagers by building these facilities.
