Malti Devi, a housewife from Dadawan village, was like any other woman in her village, except that she was extra committed to breaking the cycle of poverty in her life. She came to Open Hands Education and trained in the sewing program. Two years later she reports that she is making a good salary. Malti is grateful to Open Hands sewing centre for teaching her to sew school uniforms and other clothing. Open Hands has helped her to change her life and become more self-reliant. When she took a six month free sewing course at Open Hands Education Trust she learned many useful skills, including sewing, cutting, button-hole making, ironing and packaging of uniforms. She says that with the extra money she is able to earn by sewing at home after for housework and chores are done, she is now able to pay for her children to attend a private school.

Pushpa Kumari

Pushpa sadly lost her father while she was still in school. She wanted to be able to find a job despite having a disability, so she attended a Needs Assessment program near her home, and she was referred to Open Hands Education Trust's vocational program. She developed her computer skills and successfully found a job with Shell in the accounting department. She has found new independence and self-esteem and is able to support her family.

Rubbi Kumari

Rubbi completed her schooling at the Government School. She then took a 6 month vocational training program in sewing at Open Hands Trust. She was a dedicated student and her enthusiasm helped her to learn quickly and grow in confidence. After finishing the program she was able to find a job in the city where she now makes clothing and works in sales. Rubbi is very happy that she is able to live an independent life of her own.

Reshmi Kumari

Reshmi Kumari

Reshmi sadly lost her father while she was in school. After she graduated she joined the vocational course in sewing at Open Hands Education Trust. Reshmi had been taught Hindi in school but she wanted very much to learn English and she worked hard to learn, often carrying around her English workbook with her while in class. She was very hard working and when she finished the program at Open Hands she was able to find a job working at a women's tailoring shop in the city. She now earns a good salary and has blossomed into a confident young woman who is able to be independent and contribute to supporting her family.
