Bijay Sharma was a Government employee working with Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL), a subsidiary of Coal India Limited, which is in turn under the ownership of the Ministry of Coal, Government of India. Mr.Sharma served as a driver for the company for fifteen years. After his retirement in 2004, he operated a personal public passenger bus service for many years. In 2017 his desire to do something more meaningful and helpful for others, led him to become involved with social service programs through Open Hands Education Trust. Mr.Sharma is currently the Secretary of the Board of Trustees for Open Hands Education Trust. He is also personally involved with all parts of the program,and provides day-to-day support for the school and the women's education and job skills programs.
